Composite bonding today is a super exciting treatment option for patients. The composite material is the same material that we use for fillings.

What we do with composite bonding is that we carefully place and sculpt filling material over the tooth. This is specialized filling material because it resembles tooth structure very closely.

What’s great is that it has the same process in terms of smile design we use for porcelain veneers, I use for composite bonding. The design is the same, but the material is different. This gives patients the flexibility to choose their material, while having some control over their investment.

Composite is not as premium as porcelain. I do find it can chip and stain, but I have travelled throughout North America, and learned many techniques for the past 10 years so that my composite bonding will closely rival the polish of porcelain and stain a lot less, while making 1/3–1/2 the investment.

This is my favourite procedure. I am able to help so many younger patients, or people in general who have fears of removing any tooth material.

• Whitening trays, which you can get to keep forever, and consistently come to us for the whitening gel

Nowadays we provide a schedule for sensitivity so that your whitening experience is as painless in terms of sensitivity as possible.

• If you are more sensitive we give you an overnight or lower concentration gel
• If you are not so sensitive, then a faster more concentrated gel works

There are sensitivity gels that you can use with your whitening trays and alternate between the whitening gel and sensitivity gel. This is effective for a lot of people who suffer from sensitive and still want to get their teeth whitening.

Nitrous Oxide
We don’t do too much sedation at the office. But we do offer nitrous. It’s safe, you can drive
home, and there’s no turn around time. It really helps in taking the anxiety out of a lot of
treatments. We use it mainly for kids and for wisdom teeth extractions.  It’s great for kids as it
takes the edge off. Kids get really fidgety. 

In rare occasions, such as when patients want actual IV sedation, we get an anesthesiologist to
come to the office. This has to be planned months in advance. 

I will say, majority of people’s fears from the dentist comes from the needle. I have worked on
my needle skills for the past 10 years. To me, one of the greatest joys is listening to a patient
say, wait that was the needle. I didn’t feel anything. 

Imagine saying to that patient, well great- most painful part of the appointment is done. Now you
can sense this ease off them. A huge weight off their shoulders. 

So i really take my time to get to the know patients, and figure out what level of sedation would
be required for them to get their dental treatment completed. It’s just rewarding figuring that it’s
the needle cause i know that’s where I’m going to impress them. 

Of course, Other times, there’s a much larger fear. We can spot that out. Either we refer the kids
out to pediatric dentist. Or we refer our patients out to IV sedation clinics

Patients should consider the dentist like a smile architect. Let’s say you want to build a house, first you get it drawn out on paper. In the dentist’s case we do it photoshop. Then sometimes, the architect builds a 3d model of the building.

In your case, we build you temporaries. Once there’s approval on the shape, the fit, the size, and the colour, only then do we proceed to the finals. The final will very closely resemble the temporaries, except just way more beautiful.

This process really alleviates the fear for some patients. They feel involved in the process, they feel the excitement in the progress, and then by the time the finals are in they are usually already ecstatic.

The Role of Photography

An example in smile cloud. What’s interesting is that with photography, we see light reflections off the contours of the teeth. When designing your veneers, whether it be composite or porcelain, we copy these light reflections so the shape mimics the finals.

With the DSLR photography, tooth is not a single white colour, or yellow. There’s multiple translucent layers here. You can see yellows, blues, violets, clear and opaque layers.

When we used to take selfies previously, before the phone cameras got so good, the teeth appeared white. This is because the phone didn’t pick up all the different colours of the tooth. So people used to think that hey, I want that white colour on the person, thinking that was the colour those celebrities or whoever got the veneers, chose to get.

This is unfortunate because a lot of the times, beautiful looking veneers were perceived as fake. People then also proceeded to wanting those fake white veneers, simply because they saw celebrities getting them.

Thankfully since camera quality is getting better, and photography has become such an important staple in dentistry, I strongly believe that people are starting to realize that veneers can be very natural and will blend seamlessly, if done right, for a person’s smile.
